NMPED Family Cabinet
PARENT LEADERS WANTED

The New Mexico Public Education Department is working hard to improve outcomes in all our state's schools, and we are counting on parents to help.

The PED Family Cabinet is an important new program to inform and empower a select group of parents. Members will learn in-depth about changes in public education in New Mexico, then share that information with their school districts and communities. They'll also gain a forum to bring local issues and concerns directly to the attention of the PED.

ARE YOU A PARENT LEADER?

We're recruiting Family Cabinet members now for the coming school year. The application deadline is February 3.

The Family Cabinet will require commitment and initiative on the part of all our participants. But the rewards — for parents and students alike — will be significant.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

The Family Cabinet will meet six times between March 2017 and May 2018. These will be intensive working sessions with PED staff, educators, and community partners. The PED will provide, or reimburse members for lodging and meals using approved state rates. Monthly conference calls will help keep members fully up-to-date.

In turn, members are asked to host two sessions in their local schools or districts during their terms. The PED will help Family Cabinet members work with their principals and superintendents to partner with Family Cabinet members to facilitate these events.

The first statewide Family Cabinet meeting is scheduled for Saturday, March 7, from 8:30 am to 3:30 pm in Santa Fe.

OUR MEMBERSHIP CRITERIA

Parents, foster parents, legal guardians and custodial grandparents (or other family members) of New Mexico public school K-12 students are eligible to join the Family Cabinet.

If your application is accepted to move on to phase 2 of the interview process, the PED will contact you to set up a phone interview. You'll also be asked to submit two letters of recommendation, and complete a survey that will help the PED further understand your qualifications and learn more about you.

The NMPED will make final selections on February 17.
